Creating formatting button bar on dialog box

Does anyone know how to create a button bar on a dialog box that is functionally equivalent to the formatting button bar at the top of the module?  I know the richText box on a dialog box has formatting by right-clicking, but I want to also include a button bar that does the same thing (like bold, italic, etc.)

The functions are unclear in the DXL reference manual (it references the same functions as you would use to create module button bars and menus) and everytime I try to use them, I throw an exception.  There are other functions for creating menubars and buttons on a dialog box, but I can't seem to tie them together with the richText dialog box element.
